Demography of the Siberian Nenets in the First Third of the 20th Century
E.A. Volzhanina.
The present article examines temporal variations in population size and the demographic parameters of the Siberian
Nenets in the fi rst third of the 20th cent. The history of the census among the nomadic population is outlined with regard
to factors such as traditional lifestyle, ideas concerning the individual, time, and family, and the effect of language
differences and relationships with the Russian population. The demographic characteristics estimated attest to the
straightforward reproduction of generations, showing no evidence of their dying out. Based on the analysis of census
records and land-use surveys, it has been demonstrated that the apparent high, absolute population growth is actually
the result of improved registering and various assimilation processes.
