Sargat Burial Sites in the Middle Irtysh Area: A Gender Analysis
N.A. Berseneva.
Based on Early Iron Age (6th century BC – 4th century AD) sites on the Middle Irtysh, Western Siberia, an attempt
is made to reconstruct certain aspects of gender relations in ancient society. The human remains and accompanying
artifacts are regarded as a single assemblage. This new approach has made it possible to advance certain hypotheses
concerning gender structure and gender stereotypes in Sargat society.
Keywords: Gender archaeology, burial rite, Sargat culture, Early Iron Age, archaeological assemblage.
